Nassau School District Science Fair Participants at Callahan Middle, Fernandina Beach Middle, Yulee Middle and Yulee High Schools competed with other students in NE Florida for top prizes and awards during the NE Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair held in Jacksonville.

Meadow Addington, FBMS, said, “The best part of coming is presenting my project to the judges.” Collin Sewell agreed, “The judges were very interested in my research.” In support of science fairs, Dr. Kathy Burns, Nassau District Superintendent, states, “Science Fairs extend the learning and skills of our students beyond the classroom. Students move from hypothesis to results with research, testing, and data collection. We are proud of these students and celebrate their success!”

Science Fairs, which are supported by the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair, are a S.T.E.M. competition that has operated in Florida for over 63 years. It is a systemic process by which students compete school-wide, regionally, nationally and internationally. Allowing for the exploration of personal interest areas, these competitions heighten student interest in science, math and computer science. By promoting the cognitive and intellectual development of students, science fairs are authentic, hands-on experiences through scientific investigations. These competitions also foster the development of students’ sense of their own capabilities and qualities.

All students who advanced to the Regional Fair are already winners of their school science fairs. Two Nassau county students were awarded Honorable Mention, Mathew Scruggs and Meadow Addington of FBMS. Additionally, Miss Addington won the President’s Award for First Time Presenters and the Inspiring Excellence Award.
