NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Who We Play For is funding and offering free electrocardiogram (ECG) heart screenings for Nassau County School District eighth-grade students who plan to participate in athletics as freshmen in high school.

This proactive screening opportunity supports student-athlete safety and aligns with Florida’s recently passed Second Chance Act (SB 1070/HB 1135), which makes Florida the first state to require public high school student-athletes in grades 9–12 to receive at least one ECG screening prior to participation in sports. The requirement will take effect beginning with the 2026–2027 school year.

Through this partnership, families are encouraged to take advantage of the no-cost ECG screening, which typically costs approximately $150 per student. While the screenings are fully funded and free to families, optional voluntary donations may be made to support Who We Play For and its mission to prevent sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes.

Registration information and additional details will be shared through each school’s website and Facebook page. Screening dates are scheduled as follows:

  • Callahan Middle School: February 20, 2026

  • Fernandina Middle School: March 27, 2026

  • Hilliard Middle–Senior High School: February 27, 2026

  • Yulee Middle School: April 17, 2026

The Nassau County School District appreciates Who We Play For’s commitment to student health and safety and encourages eligible families to participate in this important, potentially life-saving opportunity.
