After 32 years of dedicated service to Nassau County School District, serving in roles including teacher, school counselor, RTI specialist, Staffing Specialist, ESE Coordinator, and Director of Exceptional Student Education, Patsi Kelly will retire at the end of this school year. The district is proud to name Dr. Tara Middleton, current principal of Yulee Middle School, as the next Director of Exceptional Student Education (ESE).

Dr. Tara Middleton is an experienced educational leader now in her fifteenth year in public education and currently serves as Principal of Yulee Middle School. She holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Secondary Education from the University of Connecticut, a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Florida.

Dr. Middleton began her career teaching Biology and Marine Science at Mainland High School in Daytona Beach before moving to David C. Hinson Middle School, where she taught seventh and eighth-grade comprehensive science and developed a deep commitment to supporting adolescent learners. Her expertise in instructional practice led her to serve as an Instructional Coach for science, supporting teachers in strengthening curriculum and improving student achievement. She later transitioned into administration as a Dean of Students at University High School in Orange City, Florida.

After relocating to Nassau County in 2019, she joined Yulee Middle School as Assistant Principal and now leads the school as Principal. Dr. Middleton remains dedicated to fostering inclusive practices, advocating for students with exceptional needs, and building collaborative systems that empower educators and families. Her work is guided by a clear mission: to build up strong children and educators in a way that brings joy, purpose, and passion for the journey ahead.

The Nassau County School District looks forward to the continued success of Exceptional Student Education under Dr. Middleton’s leadership. The district remains grateful for the lasting legacy of service and dedication that Ms. Kelly demonstrated throughout her career.
