In 2025, Florida updated its statewide expectations for student cell phone and wireless device use during the school day. These changes are designed to help students stay focused, reduce classroom distractions, and support a safe and productive learning environment for all students.

Under Florida law, students may still possess a wireless communications device while on school property or while attending a school function. However, when and how students may use those devices depends on their grade level.

For elementary and middle school students, wireless communication devices may not be used during the school day. This means students should keep their devices put away and turned off or silenced from the beginning of the school day until the end of the school day, unless an approved exception applies.

For high school students, wireless communication devices may not be used during instructional time. A high school student may only use a device during instructional time if a teacher specifically directs students to use it for an educational purpose. High school teachers are also required to designate an area for devices during instructional time.

Wireless communication devices may include cell phones and other personal electronic devices that allow students to communicate, access the internet, or receive messages. Families should encourage students to keep these devices stored properly during the school day and to follow all school and classroom expectations.

There are limited exceptions. Students may use a wireless communication device during the school day if the use is required by an Individualized Education Plan, a 504 accommodation plan, or a written doctor’s note from a licensed physician stating that the device is medically necessary.

Parents and guardians play an important role in helping students understand and follow these expectations. Before the school year begins, families are encouraged to talk with their child about when devices may and may not be used at school. Students should also understand that violating the cell phone policy may result in disciplinary action in accordance with the district’s Code of Student Conduct.

These changes are not intended to prevent families from communicating with students. If a parent or guardian needs to get an important message to a student during the school day, they should contact the school’s front office. School staff will help make sure urgent messages are shared appropriately.

Our goal is to protect instructional time and create an environment where students can learn, participate, and stay engaged throughout the school day. We appreciate the partnership of our families as we work together to support student success.
