I. The safety of students, staff, school visitors, and others while on school property is of significant importance to the School Board. An individual’s use of Electric Bikes (E-Bikes) on school property has the potential to present a safety hazard for the operator and to others (students, staff, visitors, pedestrians and motorists) while on school grounds. This policy is established to promote the safe and responsible use of E-Bikes on school property and applies to all students, staff and visitors while on District property.
II. Students.
It is a privilege for students to be able to bring an E-Bike to school. Students in grades 6-12 are permitted to ride their E-Bike to and from school and park in the designated area for E-Bikes. Students must comply with all applicable state and local laws for operating an E-Bike. Students must register their E-Bike with the District.
Students violating this policy may have their E-Bike permit revoked for the student’s failure to follow the provisions of this Policy and any requirements of State or local law or any school rule and face other disciplinary consequences.
The School District assumes no responsibility for the loss, damage, or theft of any E-Bike or any mode of transportation permitted on school grounds in accordance with this Policy.
III. E-Bike Permits.
E-Bikes are allowed on school property only if the E-Bike operator possesses a valid E-Bike permit issued by the District.
a. An E-Bike permit will be issued to a student if the following requirements are met:
i. This student and parent must complete the E-Bike Permit Application and sign, acknowledging that they have read and understand the E-Bike Rules handout (this document).
ii. The student completes an E-Bike safety course. Documentation of course completion must be submitted with the E-Bike Permit Application.
E-Bike Safety Courses
Students can take any on-line or in-person E-Bike safety course that allows them to print out proof of completion upon their successful completion of the course. The District is not requiring or endorsing any particular course. A simple search of the web will provide a variety of options. Some courses require a charge, but there are also free options.
iii. Once awarded an E-Bike permit, students will receive a sticker to affix to the head-tube of the E-Bike.
iv. Replacement stickers may be issued for lost or stolen IDs or E-Bikes or if the student gets a new E-Bike
IV. Behavioral Expectations.
a. E-Bike operators must adhere to all traffic rules and regulations, as well as any laws specific to electric bikes while using their E-Bike on school property. Only some of these rules, regulations, and laws are covered in this E-Bike policy, but students are expected to know and follow all of them.
b. Any student observed violating state or local laws or driving recklessly or dangerously may face disciplinary action.
c. Individuals are responsible for their E-Bikes while on school premises. The school district is not liable for lost, stolen, or damaged electric bikes.
