We are so proud of our YMS Band Program! Our pep band and jazz band are made up of talented 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who bring energy, heart, and incredible music to our school.
Led by our amazing band director, Mr. Andy Shepard, these students work hard, cheer loud, and play even louder! Whether they’re hyping up a game or setting the mood with jazz, they always represent YMS with pride.
And let’s be honest… Mr. Shepard might just be the best band director in the world.
(Okay… we might be a little biased. 😉)
Huge shoutout to our students for their dedication, to Mr. Shepard for inspiring them every day, and to the One Mill that allowed us to revamp our cafeteria sound system so we could properly hear these awesome performances. Keep making music, Hornets! 🎺🐝💛

Last week, Mrs. King challenged her students to design their own dream‑home floor plans after finishing their exploration of the Architecture & Construction career cluster. This hands‑on activity allowed students to apply math, measurement, and design skills in a fun and meaningful way.
Students also had the special opportunity to meet LTCD Brittni King, who spoke about her work as a civil engineer and her service in the U.S. Navy. Her visit brought real‑world insight to the classroom and helped students understand how these skills are used in professional engineering careers.💡
Next week, students will bring their plans to life by creating 3D models of their floor designs using Tinkercad. Mrs. King can’t wait to see what they build!

Students in Ms. Perry’s 6th grade art class are hard at work on their value studies, using focused art lamps to observe how highlights, midtones, and deep shadows bring drawings to life. These hands-on lighting setups help students understand how light and shadow work together to create realistic form, an essential skill in visual art.
And don’t miss the clay projects drying on the back shelf! Our young artists have been exploring multiple mediums, from drawing to ceramics, as they build confidence, creativity, and craftsmanship.
A Special Thank You to Nassau County Residents ❤️
Because our community voted YES on the One Mill, our art programs have been able to purchase new tools, including brand-new kilns that allow students to create, fire, and finish their own clay pieces right here on campus. These millage funds also support materials like art lamps, clay, tools, and classroom supplies that make hands‑on learning possible every day.
We are incredibly grateful for your continued support of arts education. Your investment helps keep creativity alive in our classrooms!
📸 Stay tuned—photos of our students’ kiln-fired clay masterpieces are coming soon!

Today we’re excited to highlight one of our incredible 6th grade math teachers here at YMS, Mrs. Eck!
With 21 years of experience in education, 16 years teaching, she brings expertise, patience, and a truly caring spirit to her classroom each day.
A fun fact about Mrs. Eck: she’s a proud member of MENSA, proof that our students are learning from one truly brilliant mind! 🤓💛
When she’s not teaching, you’ll likely find her enjoying time with her grandchildren or relaxing at the beach. Her favorite hobbies include sewing, and she loves a good chocolate bar as a treat!
We are so grateful to have Mrs. Eck as part of our YMS team. Thank you for everything you do for our students and school community!💛🐝

As the these chilly temperatures fade away (hopefully soon!) our hearts are warmed every single day by the AMAZING dedication of our cafeteria kitchen crew. ❤️
They’ve taken it upon themselves to bring comfort and joy to our students this winter with classic, cozy favorites like grilled cheese with tomato soup, chili with cornbread, and so many other delicious meals that keep our kids warm, smiling, and ready to learn.
This team always goes above and beyond to make sure that every student has a full belly and a great start to their day. Their hard work, creativity, and care never go unnoticed, and our school is better because of them. :)
