Hello Hilliard Elementary School Parents and Families! This is your principal, Danielle Loudermilk.
As you are aware, our community has been experiencing residual smoke from nearby forest fires over the past several days. Upon arrival to campus this morning, we observed a noticeable change in air quality. Since that time, we have been actively monitoring conditions and taking steps to support the health and safety of our students and staff.
Out of an abundance of caution, we have made the decision to postpone testing for students in kindergarten through second grade today. Testing will be rescheduled for a later date, and families will be notified once new dates are confirmed. If conditions permit, Math testing will resume on Thursday, 4/23/26.
For students who may have already begun or completed testing earlier this morning, their results will be carefully reviewed to ensure fairness and accuracy. Students and families will have the opportunity to keep completed scores if they reflect the student’s best performance, or have the assessment reset and retaken in full at a later date if needed. This approach ensures that no student is penalized or disadvantaged as a result of today’s circumstances.
We also want to ensure families feel supported in making the best decision for their child. Any student absences or early check-outs related to air quality concerns will continue to be excused.
Throughout the morning, we have implemented additional measures to help mitigate the impact of the smoke, including:
-Bringing an air filtration unit to the cafeteria
-Making masks available for students and staff who wish to use them
-All PE classes and recess are being held indoors
We will continue to monitor air quality conditions closely and remain in communication with district leadership to guide any further decisions.
The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. We appreciate your trust, flexibility, and partnership as we navigate this situation together.
Thank you for your continued support.
