🔬🧪 8th Grade Science in Action! 🧪🔬

Mrs. Russell’s 8th graders recently wrapped up their unit on Cell Theory and Body Systems with a hands-on “Homer-ostasis” Lab!

Throughout this unit, students have learned that the body works hard to maintain a stable internal environment in all cells — keeping a constant temperature, balanced levels of oxygen, electrolytes and sugars, and a stable pH (acidity level).

To bring this concept to life, students took on the challenge of maintaining homeostasis in a leaky cup! 💧

Their task:
✔️ Keep the water level constant
✔️ Maintain the same color (concentration)
✔️ Control the temperature

Using cold water, hot water, and yellow dye, students had just five minutes to keep their “leaky system” balanced and match it to a control cup. Through teamwork and assigned lab roles — such as Thermal Technician, Chill Specialist, Concentration Chemist, Temperature Tracker, Lab Architect, and Procedure Captain — students collaborated to problem-solve under pressure.

This engaging lab allowed students to see firsthand how challenging it can be to maintain balance — just like the human body does every second of every day!

We are proud of their critical thinking, teamwork, and scientific skills on display. Check out the photos of our scientists in action! 🧬✨

📐⚡ Math in Motion in 8th Grade Pre-Algebra! ⚡📐

Engaging, hands-on learning is taking place in Ms. Dyal’s 8th Grade Pre-Algebra class (Room 25-04) as students explore geometric transformations!

Recently students learned to identify and apply translations (slides), reflections (flips), and rotations (spins) on the coordinate plane. Through whole group instruction and guided notes in their Interactive Notebooks (INB), students are building a strong foundation in understanding how figures move and change.

During small group rotations with Mr. Andrews, instruction is differentiated to support every learner:
🔹 Targeted guided practice
🔹 Collaborative problem-solving
🔹 Extended application and deeper analysis

At the computer station, students are strengthening their skills through IXL practice—writing transformation rules, graphing reflections, and analyzing rotations with immediate feedback to guide their learning.

Throughout the week, students are engaged in:
✏️ Daily bell ringers to reinforce prior skills
📓 Organized note-taking using WICOR strategies
🧠 Independent practice to build confidence and mastery
📊 A weekly Edulastic quiz to monitor understanding

From teacher modeling to independent application, students are thinking critically, using precise mathematical vocabulary, and applying concepts with confidence. We are proud of the focus and effort happening in Room 25-04! ⚡📚

In Mrs. McKelvy’s class, students took their understanding of cylinders to the next level by creating interactive and visually rich Frayer models. Each student constructed a detailed net of a cylinder, carefully labeling key dimensions such as radius, height, and diameter. They then applied mathematical formulas to calculate both the surface area and volume of their cylinder, demonstrating not only procedural skill but also conceptual understanding. This activity allowed students to blend creativity with mathematical reasoning—transforming abstract formulas into meaningful representations. Their Frayer models now serve as both learning tools and works of academic art, beautifully capturing how geometry connects shapes, measurements, and real-world problem solving.

Seniors in Mrs. Wills’ AP Literature class brought a whole new meaning to “building” literary analysis this week! 📚🧱

While diving into Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, students used a game of Jenga as a hands-on way to explore the novel’s complex themes. Each block pulled revealed a prompt—ranging from characterization and symbolism to themes of ambition, isolation, and responsibility. If they could successfully analyze the prompt, they kept building. If not… well, the tower (and sometimes their argument!) came crashing down.

This interactive approach helped students:

-Strengthen textual evidence skills

-Practice on-the-spot critical thinking

-Engage in meaningful peer discussion

-Make connections between structure and theme (just like the fragile balance in the novel itself!)

Learning doesn’t have to stay in the book—sometimes you have to stack it up, take risks, and see what holds. So proud of these seniors for embracing creativity while sharpening their analytical skills! 💡

Big shoutout to Mr. Weyman and his Government seniors for the incredible work they’re doing in class! 👏

Through engaging instruction and project-based learning, students are diving headfirst into the legislative process by drafting and writing their own bills for HMSHS Law. From identifying real-world issues to crafting formal legislative language and debating policy details, they’re experiencing authentic, hands-on learning at its best.

This dynamic assignment promotes critical thinking, collaboration, civic literacy, and student voice, while giving seniors meaningful insight into how laws are created and refined. It’s a powerful example of real-world application in action.

Way to go, seniors! Your dedication, creativity, and leadership are truly impressive! 🇺🇸📚

Building 5 is beautifully decorated in honor of Black History Month, and the powerful messages displayed throughout the space invite reflection, learning, and appreciation.

One quote on the wall reminds us: “Honor those who stepped forward when others were thinking backwards.” It’s a meaningful tribute to the courage and leadership of those who paved the way for progress.

Another display highlights the historical significance of quilt codes believed to have been used by enslaved African Americans to help navigate the Underground Railroad — a powerful reminder of resilience, ingenuity, and hope in the face of unimaginable hardship.

A beautifully painted banner reads: “Dream like Martin Luther King Jr., Fight like Malcolm X, Write like Maya Angelou.” These words honor the lasting impact of leaders whose voices and actions continue to inspire generations.

Thank you to students, faculty and staff that helped create these meaningful displays. Building 5 stands as a space of reflection, education, and celebration this Black History Month. ❤️
