Mr. West’s 6th Grade World History classes have been hard at work wrapping up their unit on China, Korea, and Japan—and what a creative finish it’s been!

To bring their learning to life, students took on a hands-on challenge inspired by the Great Wall. Each student designed and built their own box, which was then assembled with others to form a collaborative “mini Great Wall.” With only minimal materials provided, students were encouraged to think creatively and gather additional resources to enhance their designs.

This project wasn’t just about building—it was about understanding. Through the activity, students explored a key concept in history: civilizations flourish or struggle based on their access to resources, and trade plays a crucial role in obtaining what they need to thrive. By experiencing limitations firsthand, students gained a deeper appreciation for how geography, resource availability, and innovation shaped ancient societies.

Great work to all of our young historians for their creativity, teamwork, and thoughtful connections to the past!

📈✨ Algebra in Action in Mrs. Musgrove’s Class! ✨📈

There is great learning and engagement happening in Mrs. Musgrove’s Algebra classroom! Students are actively exploring exponential functions as they work toward mastering key concepts aligned with the standards.

Through focused instruction and meaningful practice, students are learning how to graph exponential functions from tables, equations, and written descriptions, while identifying important key features. They are also building a deeper understanding by classifying functions as exponential growth or decay.

Students began with their weekly bell ringer to reinforce prior knowledge, followed by interactive notes on “Key Features of Exponential Functions,” which they added to their math notebooks as a resource for continued learning.

With active engagement, hands-on note-taking, and strong mathematical discourse, students are developing the skills and confidence they need to succeed. This intentional instruction is preparing them for success on the BEST Algebra test coming up on May 8, 2026—we know they are going to do an amazing job! 💪📊

Mr. Conner’s Biology students have been diving into an engaging, hands-on learning experience as they took on their frog dissection labs! 🐸🔬

Through this interactive investigation, students are applying key concepts in anatomy and physiology, identifying major organ systems, and analyzing the relationships between structure and function. This lab provides an authentic opportunity for students to practice scientific inquiry, develop critical thinking skills, and reinforce content vocabulary in a meaningful, real-world context.

By actively engaging in the dissection process, students are aligning their learning with state science standards, particularly in the areas of organismal structure, biological organization, and the use of scientific tools and techniques. These experiences support mastery of essential benchmarks and promote deeper conceptual understanding beyond traditional instruction.

As we prepare for the upcoming Biology assessment on May 11th, opportunities like this are instrumental in building confidence and competence. Hands-on labs help solidify foundational knowledge, enhance retention, and allow students to make connections that will support their success on standardized assessments.

Check out our Flashes in action as they explore, collaborate, and grow as young scientists! 🧪✨

✂️🪨📄 Everyone loves a good game of Rock, Paper, Scissors! 📄🪨✂️

In Mrs. McKelvy’s 7th grade math class, students are taking this classic game to the next level by using it to explore experimental probability!

By playing multiple rounds and carefully recording their results, students are discovering how often rock, paper, and scissors actually occur. They are then comparing their findings to the theoretical probability, which predicts that each option should appear one-third of the time in a fair game.

This engaging, hands-on activity helps bring math to life as students see firsthand how real-world results connect to mathematical predictions. They’re also learning that the more trials they complete, the closer their experimental results tend to get to the theoretical probability.

Through teamwork, practice, and curiosity, our students are strengthening their mathematical thinking skills—all while having fun!

This kind of interactive learning is helping prepare our students for the FAST Math test coming up on May 12, 2026—and we just know they are going to ROCK it! 🎉📊

🩺❤️ Mrs. Russell’s 6th Grade Science Update ❤️🩺

This week in science, our 6th graders have been diving into the fascinating world of the human body systems—focusing on the respiratory and circulatory systems!

Students explored what heart disease is and learned ways to prevent it by watching an informative video and discussing who may be at the greatest risk. To bring their learning to life, students stepped into the role of medical professionals—dressed in hospital type PPE and ready to diagnose! 🏥

Each group was given six different patient case studies. They carefully read through each case, identified and summarized risk factors, and worked collaboratively to determine which patient was at the highest risk for heart disease.

This hands-on, real-world activity was truly eye-opening for our students and helped them understand the importance of making healthy choices.

We are so proud of their hard work, critical thinking, and enthusiasm! 💙

This week, our 6th grade classes took math outside for a hands-on lesson that brought geometry to life! Students worked in pairs to solve area problems by finding the area of composite figures drawn on the sidewalk with chalk. Armed with clipboards, calculators, and determination, they carefully analyzed each shape, breaking the larger figures into smaller figures to calculate total area.

The outdoor setting created excitement and engagement as students collaborated, checked each other’s work, and applied their math skills in a meaningful way. It was a fun and active way to reinforce problem-solving, teamwork, and confidence in mathematics. 📐✏️

All of this great practice is getting our students ready for FAST Math testing in May—and if this week is any sign, they are going to do an amazing job! We can’t wait to see them shine! 🌟

2026 HMHS MORP A Night Above the Clouds
March is Arts Education Month and Music in Our Schools Month, making it the perfect time to highlight the incredible experiences our students have through the arts!

Recently, members of the HMSHS Flashes Band traveled to Music Performance Assessment (MPA) at First Coast High School. MPA is an annual event where school bands perform for professional adjudicators who evaluate their musicianship, preparation, and overall performance. Rather than competing directly against other schools, students receive valuable feedback that helps them grow and improve as musicians.

Congratulations to Mr. Hazlett, Band Director, and our talented band students for their hard work, dedication, and the pride they show in representing HMSHS. Opportunities like MPA allow our students to strengthen their musical skills, build confidence, and experience the rewards of teamwork and discipline.

We are grateful for the continued support of our community and the resources made possible through the One Mill investment, which helps provide instruments, equipment, and materials that support meaningful music education experiences for our students.

Please join us in celebrating Mr. Hazlett and our Flashes Band students for their commitment to excellence in music! 🎶 #MusicInOurSchools #OneMillImpact
