🚨 Important Health & Safety Message for YMS Families 🚨

Today, students at Yulee Middle School will be coming home with an important fact sheet about the dangers of opioids and fentanyl—two substances that pose serious risks to youth across the country.

📘 The fact sheet includes:

What fentanyl is and why it’s so dangerous—even in small amounts.
The risks of opioid misuse, including common prescription drugs.
How mixing substances like opioids and alcohol can lead to life-threatening consequences.
We encourage all families to take a few minutes tonight to review this information together. These conversations matter. Awareness and education are key to helping our students make smart, safe choices.

💬 Talk with your children. Ask questions. Share concerns.
Together, we can protect and empower our students.

Thank you for being active partners in keeping our Hornet community safe and informed.

🌟 Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Moran – 6th Grade Math Magic! 🌟

At Yulee Middle School, we’re lucky to have educators like Ms. Moran, whose passion for teaching shines through every day. Her energy, positivity, and creativity make math come alive for her students!

Just this week, she launched a new reward system in her class called “Secret Student”—a motivational program where one student is quietly observed throughout the week. 💛She is always looking for ways to innovate. "I love seeing her students out and about during one of her special school-wide scavenger hunts."

When she’s not inspiring young minds, Ms. Moran loves to exercise, do a little interior decorating, and spend time with her loving family. We’re so thankful to have her on our Hornet Team!

💬 Drop a comment to show Ms. Moran some love and appreciation!

🎉 Hornet Nation, Congratulations! 🐝

Thanks to your partnership and commitment, our Hornets achieved significant gains in attendance during the 2024–2025 school year—reducing chronic absenteeism by an incredible 5.74%! 📉👏

This is more than just a number. It means more students in class, more learning, and more opportunities to succeed. Research shows that students who are chronically absent—defined as missing 10% or more of the school year—are at significantly higher risk of falling behind academically, dropping out, and facing long-term challenges.💡

Let’s keep the momentum going! This year, we’re aiming even higher. Every day counts. Every student matters.

✅ Here’s how you can help:

Schedule appointments outside of school hours when possible.
Set consistent morning routines.
Communicate with us early if your child needs support.

📅 Remember:
Attend Today to Achieve Tomorrow.
Together, we can ensure every Hornet is present, prepared, and thriving.

📣 YMS Families — We’re Off to a Strong Start! 🐝

This week, our Principal, Dr. Middleton, met with each grade level to review our school-wide expectations and policies. From dress code and hallway behavior to technology use and respectful language, we’ve made sure every student knows what it means to follow the Hornet Way: being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe — every day, in every space.

We talked about:

Arriving on campus and heading straight to breakfast or first period
Keeping electronics off and in backpacks during school hours
Speaking kindly and professionally — and the serious consequences of using hurtful or derogatory language
How to report bullying and unsafe behavior (including using FortifyFL)
Keeping our campus clean and safe for all
And how meeting expectations opens the door to exciting events like dances, field trips, and end-of-year celebrations 🎉
We know most of our students already do the right thing — but we believe that setting clear, positive, and predictable expectations helps everyone flourish.

💛 Parents, this is where you come in. We need your help! Please talk with your child about what they learned this week and help us reinforce these expectations at home. Together, we’ll make this year the best one yet at YMS.

Challenge Accepted. 🖤

🎉 Over-the-Top Tuesday Teacher Highlight: Mrs. Zavala! 🔬✨

Last week during orientation, students and families got a warm welcome—but Mrs. Zavala took it to the next level! Stepping into her black-lit science classroom felt like entering a mystery lab. She created an interactive game where guests had to find clues, report their findings, and claim a prize if they cracked the code. It was science, engagement, and fun all rolled into one unforgettable experience.

This is just one example of how Mrs. Zavala brings her passion for science to life every single day. Her creativity and commitment to student engagement are truly over-the-top—and we’re beyond lucky to have her on our team.

We can’t wait to see what she dreams up next! 🚀🧪💡
