Hilliard Elementary School kindergarten students explored life in the Arctic through a hands-on science lesson about how blubber helps animals stay warm in cold environments.

Students examined a model demonstrating insulation by placing their hands into a “blubber glove” to feel how the protective layer helps retain heat. This interactive experience supported early science learning by helping students connect concepts like temperature, adaptation, and animal habitats in a meaningful way.

Hands-on exploration helps our youngest learners build curiosity, understanding, and a love of science.

Hilliard Middle Senior High School CNA students took part in a hands-on lesson focused on infection control and proper glove removal techniques.

Using chocolate syrup and strawberry syrup to represent germs, students practiced removing contaminated gloves correctly without spreading contamination. This engaging simulation reinforced the importance of safety, precision, and proper procedure in healthcare settings.

Through the CNA program, students can graduate high school as a Certified Nursing Assistant, earning a valuable industry certification while gaining real-world healthcare experience.

Students interested in enrolling in their high school’s CNA program are encouraged to reach out to their school counselor or visit the Nassau County School District Career and Technical Education page for more information.

These authentic learning experiences help prepare students for future careers in healthcare.

Southside Elementary School second-grade students are mastering money skills through a fun, engaging, hands-on math activity.

Students created custom ice cream sundaes, then calculated costs, paid for each item, and built their own combinations using coins. This real-world learning experience helped students practice counting money, addition, and decision-making in a meaningful and memorable way.

Learning truly has never been sweeter.

CTE aviation students traded the classroom for the hangar and took learning to new heights with visits to ALM Tech Technologies, Inc. and Advanced Aero Technologies Group!

Students explored the world of avionics, discovering how aircraft electrical and navigation systems keep planes communicating, calculating, and cruising safely through the skies. They also stepped into the precision-driven realm of aviation machining, seeing firsthand how specialized parts are engineered, crafted, and perfected to keep aircraft airworthy.

From circuitry to CNC machines, from schematics to metal shavings, this experience connected classroom knowledge to real-world aviation careers in the most hands-on way possible.
A huge thank you to both companies for opening their doors and showing our future aviation professionals what’s possible when skill meets sky. 🌤️

Hilliard Elementary School second-grade students took a step back in time for a 1950s-themed learning experience that brought history, reading, and math together in a meaningful way.

Students practiced real-world skills by reading menus, completing guest checks, adding totals, and using money manipulatives to pay volunteers, all while exploring what daily life was like in the 1950s. Teachers also extended their reading unit by connecting learning to primary sources and historical context.

It was an engaging and memorable day filled with hands-on learning and smiles.

Wildlight Elementary School's 5th-grade students in Mrs. Ballard & Mrs. Butcher's art classes are making ceramic Tic-Tac-Toe boards! Students learned skills such as scoring & slipping to help them build their boards. Using tools & techniques, the students attached clay coils to a slab base. After being fired in the kiln, the students then chose different glazes to add color to their pieces. Boards were fired a second time to achieve a shiny, smooth topcoat. Students will also glaze shaped pieces for gameplay.

We are grateful for the mileage in giving us the chance to introduce and explore pottery at our elementary schools!

Hilliard Middle-Senior High School students turned math into an adventure today. During their Area Gallery Walk, the room transformed into a lively, hands‑on exploration zone where everyone worked together to crack the “mysteries” of plane shapes, composite figures, and differences of shapes.

Students moved around the room, shared ideas, compared strategies, and helped one another make sense of challenging problems. Students were engaged, curious, and proud of their discoveries.

Activities like this don’t just build math skills; they build confidence, teamwork, and a sense of excitement about learning.
