The Dragon's Den Library Procedures
- How long is the checkout period? Students check out books for one week and return them on their next Library Day. If they have not finished their book, or haven’t completed their AR Quiz, they are welcome to keep the book another week.
- Do students have a Library card? Each student has a library folder. This serves as their library card and stays in the Library, so it can’t get lost.
- What about Reading Levels? Students can find their individual reading levels inside their Library folders. These level ranges are color-coded to match the different shelves in our Library. So, a student with pink and orange levels in their folder can choose books from the pink and orange shelves. Once students are at the right shelf, they are ready to find their next great read!
- How is the Library organized? Kindergarten students start checking out from the Pink Shelf. As their reading skills grow, they can also choose books from the Orange Shelf. Throughout their reading journey, students can advance to the Green, Purple, and Red Shelves, which offer more and more challenging books.
- How many books do students check out? Kindergarten students check out one book each week. First and Second graders check out two books per week. The first book must be within the student’s reading level, but the second can be any book that catches the student’s interest.
- What is our policy for Lost or Damaged Books? All books should be returned in good condition. When students notify us that a book is lost, we will issue a fine. Once that fine is paid, the student can resume checking out as normal. Books returned with water damage or significant physical damage cannot be reshelved, and a fine will be issued. All fines go towards replacing lost and damaged books. If you prefer, you may purchase a copy of the lost or damaged book and donate it to the Library in place of a fine.
- What about Special Events? The YPS Media Center hosts a Book Fair once each year. During the Book Fair's Family Night, your student can also participate in a Read-In to earn extra AR points. Each February, we host visiting authors as part of the Amelia Island Book Festival's Authors-in-Schools program. We also host a Family STEAM Night full of fun activities involving Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. The YPS Media Center is the place to be!
