How is the school budget different from a family’s budget?

In many ways, it’s the same.  As inflation hits everyone, costs go up, and the budget must be adjusted. Health care, gas, food and day-to-day expenses have increased for both families and the schools. Many businesses are increasing salaries and consumer prices to keep their employees. But in other ways, the budgets are quite different. Families can move dollars from one budget item to another. The district’s budget has very little flexibility.  Items such as facility improvements, transportation, food services and specific programs cannot be used for salaries, so budget items can’t be moved around. When it comes to increasing compensation, the pot of available revenue is much smaller than the overall budget.
